Kenya, Kangemi Resource Centre
In Kenya, Nairobi we’re partnered with the incredible NGO Orphelins Sans Frontières, who both established and run the Kangemi Resource Centre (KRC).
Kangemi is a slum area with an estimated population of well over 100,000 people. The population faces a number of challenges; poor sanitation, a lack of clean water, few health services and a large, young population in need of education. The KRC is helping the community by providing vital facilities and services for little to no cost.
Fast Forward Launches Into the KRC
With the help of our supporters, we've been able to establish a teaching and learning hub in the KRC. Together we're delivering teacher training and high quality educational content through to over 40 teachers and their student.
How the Fast Forward Hub Works
- Teachers attend group sessions on how to use tablets and where to find lesson plans, supplementary materials and content to help inspire their daily work
- They also receive sessions on how to make their lessons more effective, due to the challenging environments they work in. Modules include group-centred learning, classroom management strategies for large class sizes and gender training to encourage girl pupils to actively engage
- Once confident with the learning tablet teachers and their students attend the Hub and with the support of Fast Forward coordinators they deliver lessons
- The Hub also allows students to work independently of their teachers, at their own pace with the support of facilitators and their teachers
Through the lessons learned we plan to scale up the Fast Forward Programme in Nairobi in 2017, supporting even more teachers in delivering quality education to their students.
