Over the past 5 years, Suas has worked with our partners in Mombasa and Nairobi to provide high quality education in some of Kenya's most under-resourced communities. We do this, working with Government Schools and NGOs. Our 3 main partners are:
Gatoto Community Primary School, Mukuru, Nairobi Kongowea Primary School, Kongowea, Mombasa Maweni Primary School, Kongowea, Mombasa
Together, these schools serve a population of over 5,000 students every day. Suas takes a tailored approach to our work with each school. We work with the staff & community to identify needs and local priorities. With each school, we are working off a 3 year School Development Plans that aim to support access, improve quality and increase community engagement.
The impact of this work is already being seen, with mean scores in the Kenyan state exams increasing by an average of 10% in our Kenyan Partners. In Gatoto, this saw the number of students qualifying for Secondary School increase from 27 to 48.
Gatoto is a primary school serving over 1,000 children in the Mukuru Kwa Reuben slum in the industrial area of Nairobi. Founded by the community 13 years ago, it is recognised as one of the foremost schools in Kenya for extra-curricular achievement. Gatoto's goal is to increase economic prospects in the area & reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS in the community. Gatoto has a strong extra-curricular ethos with most of the children involved in activities outside of school hours. These activities include a choir and a variety of sport teams. Suas has strong financial and personal ties to Gatoto. In the past Suas, through the support of Irish Aid, has assisted Gatoto in the construction of their library.

Maweni and Kongowea Primary Schools are neighbouring schools within the Kisauni District of Mombasa, 20 minutes to the north of the city port. As formal registered schools, Maweni and Kongowea are our only governmental partners. With limited resources, they are currently striving to meet the government policy of Universal Primary Education (UPE). Led by Mr Musumba and Mr Ndeda respectively, their teaching staffs of 25 per school provide support to 2,000 children each.
Suas, in partnership with the Kenyan Ministry of Education and the local community, are working towards enhancing the quality of education delivered in each school. This year we are working to improve security within both school compounds by building permanent perimeter walls. In Mombasa we aim to co-ordinate our activities with our friends and fellow supporters, the Kenyan School Improvement Programme & ACTS.
