For Schools

Suas in your school

Would you like to have a Suas maths buddy or reading buddy programme in your DEIS school?

Below you will find more information about our literacy and numeracy programmes, as well as how to get one up and running.

We are currently taking applications for the 2019/20 academic year. Places are limited, so please get your application in as soon as possible.

The programmes in brief

Suas recruits, vets, and trains volunteers to work one-to-one with children on their reading or maths skills.

Reading buddies help to develop literacy, confidence, and self-correction abilities, and to nurture a love of reading for reading’s sake. They work with children from 2nd class to 1st year.

Maths buddies will use specially selected workbooks and materials to work with children on the areas of numeracy that they find particularly difficult. They work with children from 2nd class to 3rd class.

How does it work?

Reading programmes run for 8 weeks, and maths programmes for 7 weeks.

During this period, volunteers will visit your school twice a week for one hour at a time. During that hour they will facilitate two thirty-minute sessions, giving two children the chance for one-to-one instruction.

Suas provides fully trained and vetted volunteers, materials for the maths programme, and project management throughout the term. This is all done at no cost to the school.

Participating schools must provide the following: a suitable space for volunteers to work (usually a library, free classroom, or parents’ room), and a member of staff to supervise each session (usually a teacher, SNA, or librarian).

Testimonials

Below you will find some testimonials from schools that have participated in our programme in 2018/19. Names have been removed for privacy.

“This was our first experience of working with Suas volunteers, who were extremely supportive of our pupils. As well as the benefit of helping them with their numeracy, the boys also benefitted from receiving positive individual attention from fantastic role models. Thanks a million for the great work done and we look forward to other ventures with Suas. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir!”

“The children really enjoyed participating in both the literacy and numeracy programmes. The participants developed a more positive attitude to literacy/numeracy which in turn lead to the pupils becoming more engaged with the subjects.”

“The Suas Reading programme is firmly embedded into our school culture and we really appreciate the opportunity to continue working with Suas into the future. It is a wonderful programme with benefits beyond improving literacy levels and it fits very well with the Key Skills that underpin the new Junior Cycle — literacy skills, oral skills and well-being.”

“Suas and its support workers are very efficient and extremely caring to deal with.”
